Constructing a dual-protection barrier—seals employ elastic sealing lips or end-face contact structures to simultaneously block external mud and dust from infiltrating bearings and hydraulic systems, preventing contaminants from accelerating component wear or causing jamming, while also preventing internal lubricating oil or hydraulic fluid leakage that could contaminate the environment or dilute the fluid, leading to failure. Multi-layer designs such as box-type oil seals withstand deep mud and water erosion in excavator undercarriages, extending transmission component lifespan by over tenfold.

Preventing catastrophic failures and economic losses — Though small, seals serve as core sentinels for equipment safety. A single damaged oil seal may trigger hydraulic fluid spray (posing flammability risks) or lubricant contamination, ultimately causing engine cylinder scoring, bearing corrosion lock-up, and tens of thousands of pounds in damages. Conversely, optimised seals reduce friction energy consumption by 5%-10% and achieve 300,000 kilometres of maintenance-free operation through materials like fluororubber (temperature resistance: -40°C to 200°C). The Challenger space shuttle explosion due to seal failure serves as a stark warning: component failure can destroy entire equipment or even endanger lives.

Failure warning: Early seal failure manifests as hydraulic system "sweating" (micro-oil seepage), piston rod surface abnormalities, or localised overheating. Grooves formed by bearing wear permanently reduce seal lip interference, rendering replacement ineffective against leakage. Installation requires vertical press-fitting with pre-lubrication to prevent lip tearing from uneven wear.

This component underpins macro-engineering through its micro-precise structure—serving not only as a contaminant filter and lubrication guardian, but also as a strategic fulcrum for cost reduction, efficiency enhancement, and safe operation.
